How do I make my boxer dogs coat shine?

February 7th, 2010 | by admin |

My dogs coat is very dull, she eats dry food. Any ideas on how to make it more glossy?

Got this from a different Q/A website:

I have my dobes on Nutro Max, and they are very shiny. Everyone always asks how do I get them so shiny. Answer is nothing special. The food and i bath in an Oatmeal shampoo about once a month.

Get a really good dog shampoo and brush their coat as often as possible.

The main thing is the food. They need a certain combination of proteins to get that lovely coat. Have to use a premium dog food. Look up this site. You will be impressed. http://www.flintriverranch.com. If you ever want to try it use distributor 4KFA.

some horsey people i know use the round shampoo bar from lush the one with glitter in it they rub it on the horses hind quarters to make them shine for shows but I guess you want shin from the inside not applied to the outside so I would suggest oil tablets codliver of fish oil, we gave out dog ones from the health food shop cos they were loads cheeper then the pet shop ones

I feed my dogs a quality dry food and twice a week I give them a raw egg. They also get supplements from the Vet, 3V Skin Caps with Omega 3 and Vit. A, D and E in them.
When they get a bath, the best shampoo for shiny coat is a homemade one of mine.
    *made for three dogs*
    1 bottle of guiness beer
    1 cup cooked instant oatmeal
    3 egg yolks, discard whites
1/2 cup baby shampoo *for dogs or for people*
    1/4 cup aloe vera gel
    1 tablespoon Vit. E oil
Blend in blender, then bathe the dog (s)
You might want to make half as much for you dog. Massage it in and let it sit in the coat for five minutes at least then rinse out. Don’t overbathe the dog but this one does put some shine in the coat.

Bacon grease, fat cut off cooked bacon or bacon itself, mixed with the dried food a couple of times a week will keep your boxer’s coat shiny.

Further to my earlier advice, please whatever you do, DO NOT use bacon, pork or beef fat as these are saturated fats and can clog your dogs arteries. Also, if you give chocolate then please, only give chocolate that is specialy made for dogs and not human chocolate. Our chocolate has an ingredient that can poison dogs, the name of which I cant recall so if anyone knows please tell me.

When you feed your dog any dog biscuits, pour a mixture of 2 eggs and 250ml/1cup of fullcream milk.
It does really work, because I used to give it to my dogs and they never had any problems with their coats.
You can also find out from your vet, if he/she can get you some "Bob Martin tablets" We used to be able to buy it in South Africa. If not, go on the Web and look if the South African shop can help you. They are usually very good with South African products and they will deliver or send it to you.

    1) Use a good quality food, add a cod liver oil capsule once a day.
    2) Keep your dog healthy and in good condition, plenty of exercise.
    3) Bath once a month with a good quality shampoo.(Optional)
    4) Groom properly every day, start with a rubber mitt, then a rough cloth, and finish by polishing with a piece of velvet/velour.

A decent dry food such as Hills canine, royal etc. No supermarkets own stuff. Also add cod liver oil to your dogs diet, this will help with bones and coat, this works VERY well. It worked a treat on our dogs coat.

My GSD is now 16 and has had cod liver oil sinse she started showing signs of aging, this has kept her going and she is in immaculate condition, the vet didnt realise how old she was until he looked at the register. It works a treat and would recomend it to any dog owner/cat owner. For dogs 500 mg is enough once a day.

    Good luck

Place a pat of butter or olive oil in with her food. Wipe her coat, caress her, with a silk pad or scarf. Consider feeding her a balanced diet with meat. Dog’s are carnivors and it’s just human preference to feed dried food for cleaning up!

like humans they need a certain amount of oils to keep a healthy skin and hair covering, if her skin is dry or flaky she needs oil in her diet as a supplement such as cod liver oil, fish oil or kelp tablets, a small amount of warm baby oil rubbed in by hand before grooming helps the surface skin regain oils also by remoisturising, also i wouldnt recommend a solely dry food diet, a lot of dry food diets cause various health problems (kidney/liver/gum disease) even the best products such as Iams can cause these problems, alternate her food with dry and other meals, and always make sure she has plenty of water to hand when eating dry food mixes, check the gums regularly for colour if they are whit’ish in colour it could be due to anaemia, dehydration or worm problems. give her a treat of scrambled eggs occasionally, our dogs love it, hope she does well.

She might need a higher quality food, or she could have a skin condition. If she’s healthy, and you want a good quick shine, drizzle a little olive or canola oil on a rag and rub her down.
I wouldn’t advise bacon grease in her food; remember how unhealthy it is for people. Use moderation.
