So far, I am not finding a straightforward website that will allow me to find local therapy dog training programs.

I know I need to first determine if he has aptitude for this line of work.

If he has aptitude for it, I would like him to be able to visit nursing homes for example but he has to obtain credentials from a program first.

The top three therapy dog programs in the US are:

http://deltasociety.org

http://tdi-dog.org

http://therapydogs.com

Each of those sites tell you about their specific program, including information on what is required for testing and registration with them, when and where tests and courses are offered, and how to find affiliate clubs. If you don’t find what you want on the website, use the contact information to ask your questions. I’ve had the best luck with Delta, especially with them responding to questions, so that’s the one I recommend personally.

If you have a specific hospital or nursing home you’d like to visit, ask them what there requirements are. Some only accept therapy teams registered with a specific organization, while others just want the team registered and insured with someone. It would be a shame to test and register with organization "A" only to discover the facility you wish to visit only accepts registrations from organization "B." Again, if you have a specific facility in mind, they probably already have visiting therapy pet teams and can put you in touch with that group. You can then learn from those teams what it is like visiting that facility, where to get tested, where to get registered, and how to prepare.

As far as aptitude goes, first and foremost he has to be friendly and well behaved. He shouldn’t pester people who don’t want to interact with him nor shy away from those who do. He should enjoy all kinds of people and all kinds of petting, even by clumsy hands. Some people may look, sound, or smell "funny." He needs to be the sort of dog who would be just as happy cuddling with a school mascot or a kid in a wheelchair as the average person on the street. He needs basic obedience (walking politely on a leash, sit/down/stay, coming when called, leaving things alone (such as food trays or medication), etc. He needs to be good around other dogs as well. If he has the right personality, the rest can be added with socialization (introduction to lots and lots of different kinds of people) and basic training.

— edited to add —

Therapy dog training doesn’t have to start at an early age. If the dog is well adjusted and well mannered as a pet something as little as an 8 week training course can be sufficient to prepare him for testing. Yes, it is important to socialize puppies, ALL puppies (pet, therapy, etc.) at a young age, but it is not necessary to begin training to become a therapy dog at any particular age. I’ve seen 8 year old dogs prepare and take the test for the first time in their lives and pass and go on to be lovely therapy dogs.

Socialization = introducing them to lots and lots of different kinds of people and other pets

I want to start a dog training business with a facility and everything that specializes in aggression rehabilitation. The problem is I don’t have enough experience in aggression. This is why I need a business partner who does. Anyone know where to find one? or is interested? I have a lot of experience with dogs and all animals for that matter and I am very professional. Someone please help. I am in Northern VA if anyone is interested.

First – you need to find someone to take you on as a dog training apprentice.

Then once you have spent 5-7 years learning about aggression and dog behaviour, then you are going to want to take a few business courses, so that you can run a facility like that.

The best trainers in the world are not going to partner with someone who doesn’t know much. They don’t want to be stuck doing all the work.

Make yourself more valuable to them by educatingg yourself to the hilt. Go to seminars, trials, train dogs at the shelter. Make a name for yourself first.

Word travels by mouth in the dog world – so you build your rep first – then people will be searching you out and not the other way around.

Good luck!

(Oh and by the way she’s allergic to carrots)
Thanks!
Oh and they have to be available in the UK please
I’ve tried using chicken, but I think she’s attracted to the smell and it’s not very smelly. The Wellness looks good, but some of the products contain garlic which can be toxic to many dogs…

As Skipper said, I would use any treats from the pet store. Contians too many by-products and nasty additives. I use frozen small balls of peanut butter. They work awsome if your doing that 10min training session with your dog. (to prevent them from melting in your hand) My dogs love them. But be aware, my dogs like to chew there treats before swallowing. Just watch them, so they don’t choke on them.

Well, for me daschunds are the best choice of breed, so well done on that. I also think – judging by everyones answers – that you should start as early as possible. Daschunds really deserve a nice name like Koko. Whatever the name is, make sure it’s not something like Dahpne. I would also recommend a dog training service such as "Lead The Dog". Just look at www.LeadtheDog.co.uk for more information. Have a nice day!

This Dog training video is about guard dogs, attack dogs, personal protection dogs, killer dogs, or whatever type of training a dog trainer may call it. In reality this video is about a well trained black german shepherd (shepard, shepperd, Sheppard) some people spell german shepherd wrong! A well trained Doberman pincher and guard dog training done on a Rottweiler or rottie. Guard dog training and attack dog training is a serious business, so be sure to choose a qualified dog trainer. There is a big difference between a dog trainer that only demos dog training and their own trained dog, and a dog trainer that shows dog training on dogs that have been trained by their clients under supervision. That is the difference between e decent trainer and a good dog training technique. You can find more info about k9-1 specialized dog training’s technique and info on Mike D’Abruzzo by going to http://www.k9-1.com
Thank you for watching my attack guard protection dog training video!
The way this dog remains focused through all of the distraction of other dogs, and wags his tail a hundred miles an hour surely makes ‘Bubba’ a most amazing dog.

You will see a few dog tricks in this video, like when he does a little flip for his ball. The main thing that makes a dog or pet amazing in obedience or in given dog behavior, is how they can perform around distraction, and nothing is more of an unplanned distraction than a public dog park!

http://www.sitmeanssit.com Click yellow button to subscribe. Fred Hassen, CEO of Sit Means Sit Dog Training Franchise business Company, is seen here working one of his dogs in a dog park. Having a dog that has control, but yet having a dog training method or technique that does not squelch the dog’s desire is just as important.

Happy, tail wagging dogs are important for the public community to see when furthering dog training education.

A dog park is a very difficult place to control a dog’s behavior in just because there are many factors that are out of your control. This is true in life as well when you take your dog out the front door to go on a walk. Obedience training is important.

Since you cannot control the environment, it is very important to learn how to control your dog.
