What are some good dog breeds for first time owners?

My husband and I are searching for a dog to add to the family and it will be the first dog for both of us. What are some good breeds for people less experienced with dogs? We’d ideally like a medium-sized pup. Thanks!

    Oh I always wanted a Husky. The puppies look kool and when they grow they look better. I say a "HUSKY" (wolf dog).

    Get a Border Collie. They are wonderful. Playful, loving, affectionate, smart, and easy to train. You can even get a mix from the local shelter-because they really need a second chance at life.

    i would love a dog but have never had one :( but ive researched for 8 years now, but havent convinced my parents, but i havent given up! i would like to get a cocker spaniel, west highland white terrier, miniature schnauzer or cairn terrier as my first dog, because i have heard that they are relaxed and easy going dogs that are not to hyper or too lazy and stubborn!

    It has been my experience that either a black lab or a golden retriever would be idea for you. They are intelligent, friendly, loving, loyal, playful and just wonderful with kids… what more could you want from a dog? If you prefer a smaller one, just ask the breeder for the runt of the litter and often you can even get a discount since the runt is usually the last to be picked…

    id say labradors and golden retrievers the best dogs ever i have both and german Shepperd’s they are the smartest dogs ever all of them are great i have all 3 of them and there all so cute plus i prefer big dogs.

    well my first dog was a golden retriver, they are great with kids and other animals, even cats , there also not to hard to groom. and they entertain them selves, but it would be nice for them to have a toy. the same goes with labs (chocolate, golden ect.) and terriors are also nice

    Huskies are most definitely not for the first time or inexperienced dog owners…Try looking into Beagles, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers

    My first dog was a Pitbull. I got her when she was six weeks old (rescued from someone who was selling her to be a fighting dog..but surprise she became my dog). I have had her for 9 years now, I also "adopted" a stray tom cat a few years ago. It was like my dog just knew they were supposed to get along. She has been perfect, great around kids. Eneryone that knows her trusts her. She snuggles with my 3 year old nephew when he sleeps over. In my experience, the only thing you have to be careful about is "strange or unfamiliar" dogs and other animals. It’s funny, sometimes when I get home from work I find my dog and my cat snuggled up together.

    I’d suggest looking at your lifestyle and hobbies. What you like to do at the weekends etc.
    If hours and hours of walking aren’t your thing then go for a breed that doesn’t require as much exercise and vice versa, you don’t want to be dragging a lazy dog on a long walk if you enjoy them.

    Also take in to consideration the time it’s coat needs to be looked after properly, some need grooming everyday to get all the knots out. Where do you live? If you live in a rural area and walk the dog in muddy places, do you really want a long haired dog smearing mud all over your house, get a short haired dog. All points to consider.

    While I would agree labs and goldens are great dogs all the way around, that isn’t the only point when picking a dog. You have to ask yourself what your life style is like. Are you active people? or not? That is how you should be looking, when you look for a dog. You want the dog to fit into your life style. I own 1 choc lab, 1 black lab/golden and then I have two German Shorthaired Pointers. While all my dogs are great dogs, they need exercise and a lot of it. When you talk with a breeder (if that is the way you go) talk with the breeder about which pup would be suited for you. Being a first time dog owner, you don’t want the alpha of the pack. They are a bit more stubborn. If you go to a good breeder they will be able to help you decide. While a collie is a great dog, they are a working dog..If you don’t let the dog do what it’s bred to do, you are asking for trouble..So instead of looking for a certain breed, I would read up on different breeds and see what would work best for your life style. And please take the pup to "puppy school" you can get a lot of great tips for training your pup.

    well i have a dog aswell 2 and a half months old and i am a first time dog owner aswell it is a labrador she is such a placid dog or my friend has a german sheperd x cattle dog and he is a first time dog owner aswell cheers jarrod
