Do small dogs have more health problems?

I am thinking of getting a teacup dog-such as a teacup chihuahua, poodle maybe, etc…
DO they have more health issues compared to a regular chihuahua??

Hiya,
No small dogs dont have more health problems if they are pedigree and not from a back yard breeder. Although there is no such thing as a "teacup". If it is a teacup then there is something wrong and yeah it will have health problems/growth problems of some sort (most likely, but obviously there are some exceptions).
I recommend you just get a regular chihuahua , that is guarenteed to be healthy. Rather than a tiny one with health problems.

Pedigree dogs usually have the most problems. A small mutt might be your best choice.

with any purebred dog, be prepared to handle health issues. most of them now days are inbred. sad but true. this goes for just about any breed, big, small, or mini. if you want a healthier dog, get a mixed breed chihuahua or something like that. purebred dogs of any size are usually much more expensive than mixes. (i dont mean the purchasing cost either)

    Yes.

Those dogs are bred to be unnaturally small. How can that be healthy?

Honestly, if you knew what actually went into making a teacup dog (inbreeding, breeding puppies, breeding genetically inhealthy dogs, etc), you would be horrified.

Check with AKC most quality breeders will be glad to tell you of any health issues. if its a good breeder they will strive to breed out the genetic problems with small breeds. If you get a mixed dog you will not know what you are getting. They can have just as many medical issues as a purebred.

hello. i just graduated from veterinary school and this is a question many people ask when choosing the breed of a new dog. Smaller dogs do tend to live longer because of less stress on the heart from being smaller and lighter in weight. but if you are choosing between chihuahua and teacup chihuahua those dogs (including the poodle) are classified in the same category (big, medium, small). a few years ago my tpoodle named penny pasted and she was 15! which is a very long life for a dog of any size. but whatever dog you end up with, its just important to enjoy him/her and take care of it. hope that helps :)
