What are some symptoms of getting my dogs spayed?

I will be getting my dog spayed Monday and I was a little nervous about it. I heard things like, she will get fat and she will calm down. Have you guys heard these things? Are there any others I should know about getting her spayed?

They give you a care sheet when you pick your dog it will have things like no running and jumping and don’t get the stitches wet. Make sure you know how to contact your vet/vet tech after hours. Your dog may not eat much or potty much the first day, but should be back to normal after that. She shouldn’t get fat, it takes 10 days before the stitches come out and then you should be able to continue walks and stuff. Your vet/vet tech should go over this with you.

Nothing bad, I dont think. Its the best thing that you can do for a dog.

Your vet will give you a checklist of all the things that you should expect / do right after the surgery. So make sure you get that. She should recover within a couple of weeks completely.

I heard they calm down a bit and they get really lazy right after from the anesthesia but only for that day.

    Symptoms?

They won’t get fat, but they might change how much they eat. If you give your dog the amount of excersize all dogs should have, she will not get fat.

Thank you for doing the right thing.

None of my girls has ever had a problem with being spayed. The ones that were fat stayed fat, the ones that were thin stayed thin, the ones that were calm stayed calm and the ones that were hyper stayed hyper.

Never heard of them putting on weight, but she may calm down a little. She’ll probably be happier too.

I think getting your dog spayed is a good idea. There are many pros, few cons, and plenty myths about getting a dog "fixed." I found this website for you that you can look over. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/spayneut.html

she will only get fat if you don’t exercise, and feed her poorly. i have heard where some dogs get lazy afterwards but that might be caused by depression(yes dogs get depressed) so make sure after she is healed that she gets walks and plenty of play.

i own a beagle and she was still her normal active self. she might have been just a tiny bit less spazzy, but she didn’t really start to calm down till she started to get older. I think if the dog is male you notice more of a difference( but what guy wouldn’t)

oh when my dog was spayed she had a hernia from the surgery, but it went away with time. that can sometimes happen i found out so keep an eye on her wound for awhile.

Myths about Spaying & Neutering Dogs

Spaying and neutering does change the metabolism of companion animals, so in most cases, they do not need as much food to maintain their weight as unspayed/unneutered dogs.

The problem is not with the dog – it is us. We just tend to overfeed our dogs, and neutered/spayed dogs are more apt to put on weight because of that.

As for laziness, again, the amount of exercise our dogs receive and their activity levels are often dependent on us. If we do not give them opportunities for play and exercise, they can become couch potatoes just like some people.

Many spayed/neutered dogs hunt, are entered in agility shows, become service dogs, and are trained in search and rescue. These dogs are anything but lazy.

I bet those people who started the myth about spayed dogs getting fat forgot that their dog was also getting older.

Non-spayed dogs often die of uterine infections because they are hard to catch in time. Spaying reduces the chance of a uterine infection by 100%. You can’t get the infection if you don’t have the uterus.

i’ve always gotten my dogs spayed/neutered and they had come home exactly the way they left. i could only wish my current rottie would have calmed down just a LITTLE (LOL) but she’s only 8 mos. old ( 6 mos. at the time so there was no chance of that happening!! we’ve got more training ahead!
BTW I have never had an overweight dog either. you have nothing to worry about.

dogs get fat because they are over fed and underexercized.

I know fat and fit dogs that are spayed and not-spayed. The fat dogs all have the same factors – overfed and underexercized.

As for "calming down".. they become more focused. They are not so easily distracted and can focus more on you. A playful dog doesnt turn into a sad lump.

Every animal Ive ever seen spayed/neutered did not change after the surgury at all.. except for maybe being able to focus better, and possibly less agression among some individuals.
