help 1 year old maltese dog to be more socialable with other dogs?
February 24th, 2010 | by admin |when he meets other dogs, he jumps backwards & forwards towards it and will sometimes bark. He doesn’t appear to be doing it in an aggressive manner, just over excited! Trouble is, other dog owners pull their dogs away as they’re unsure how my dog is going to react, therefore he isn’t getting to meet any other dogs. Any tips would be appreciated.
i would enrol him in some dog classes
at least there you know the other owners aren’t going to walk off!
Its a great thing to do as they all get to have some supervised’ play and if any dog is reacting badly the trainer Will step in and sort it out straight away
The fact that he’s so over excited could mean that he just needs another dog to tell him off
my Husky girl was the same then she got a telling off from a jack Russel ( lol ) now shes great with other dogs

Well, how about just trying with a friends dog and explain that he’s over excited as long as the owner understand that their dog is in no danger it should be fine

You should socialize him more. Taking him to obedience classes would help greatly because he will be around numerous other dogs in a calm environment. PetSmart offers great obedience classes and you can ask to be put in a smaller class since your dog gets overly excited.

Basic obedience classes will help you learn how to work with your dog, so that you can give him a command before he is allowed to greet other dogs. He will learn manners this way. Also, asking the other owner’s permission before approaching with your dog and explaining that your dog is friendly just overly excited will help. Most friendly people with friendly dogs will understand.

All dogs do this when they see another dog that they want to play with, he is not being anti-social. You could try and get together with another dog owner for play sessions and also possible take him to training so he gets used to lots of other dogs.

Take him to a good training class, run by experienced trainers. To find your nearest, check out this site:

Training classes are not just about training, they are about teaching dogs how to behave around other dogs.

Hiya, have you got any friends with dogs? You can walk together for a while untill he gets more used to it, even better if there is a training club or agility club in your area? (he’l manage fine and love it…prob lol). They would be the best answer, he’l soon realise that it aint such a big deal to meet another dog when he see’s lots at the club week after week. Good luck, Maltese – Beautiful little guys! x
