Carnivore pet lovers, why is it ok to eat cattle and sheep but not dogs and cats?

Animal welfare would prosecute any cruelty to animals"pets" in most countries it is unacceptable to eat our pet cats and dogs.So why do you feel its ok to eat farm animals?

Good ?… alot of ppl say they like animals, but don’t really think about what happens to those cows, pigs & chickens b4 they end up on their plates.

cattle and sheep live on a vegetarian diet. Therefore their meat is safer to eat, ie less likely to transmit diseases to humans.
That’s why we eat cows and not dogs.

Its all to do with culture, as in Korea they eat dogs and Peru they eat guinea pigs (even though theyre a different type to the ones we have as pets)

This is out of my own thought, others might think differently.
I think that we dont want to eat cats and dogs and it is acceptable to eat farm animals because farm animals are mass produced, not raised with much love and arent as close to our hearts as pets are. Pets are like family, and I dont wanna eat my family. I also refuse to eat deer meat, because I have grown up loving them and living with them in our backyard.
Hmm. It’s hard to put my thoughts into words.

To me, it IS ok to eat dogs and cats as well as cattle and sheep. I don’t really give two shits if my neighbor decides to fire up the backyard grill and BBQ his dog or his cat and eat it for dinner.

Most of it is cultural, however. In other cultures, what we think of as "pets" is sometimes thought of as "food". Likewise in other cultures, what we think of as "food" is sometimes thought of as "pets".

So you are correct that in most countries, it is unacceptable to eat "pets", while it is acceptable to eat "farm animals" (or the equivalent).

You are INCORRECT that in most countries, "pets" and "farm animals" (or the equivalent) have identical meanings as they relate to specific animals.

In much of India, a cow is considered a pet, not food. In some parts of Asia, a dog is considered food, not a pet.

You should get better educated before you make such blanket statements. In several other countries people happily eat dog and cat meat. And horses.

People in China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Switzerland, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Arctic and Antarctic all eat dog meat. The Chinese have been eating dogs since from at least the time of Confucius, and possibly even before. Ancient writings from the Zhou Dynasty referred to the ‘three beasts’ (which were bred for food), including pig, goat, and dog. Mencius, the philosopher, recommended dog as the tastiest of all meats.

The double standards are cultural. I also find it strange that we (at least in the US where I live) are taught to love cats and dogs and "companion animals" but not extend the same protection and compassion to "livestock." Cows and pigs are just as sentient and intelligent. But I guess it just wouldn’t do to think of your "food" as being capable of pain and affection (though if you can eat an omnivorous diet and not lie to yourself about it hey more power to you). Anybody who says eating cats and dogs is wrong, while they themselves are eating a hamburger, is just a hypocrite.

Hell if anything, Americans should eat cats instead of cows, to help with the overpopulation of strays.

Probably because it is socially acceptable to eat cows, pigs, chickens, etc, but not socially acceptable to eat dogs and cats.. Doesn’t make it morally acceptable, though.

Because cattle and sheep are raised to be killed and eaten, dogs and cats aren’t.

It my personal choice, you can eat cats if you want to, or no meat at all, I won’t say anything. Why do you attack my meat eating?

This is a rather foolish question as any vegetarian who eat meat before converting wouldnt have eaten those animals either. The fact of the matter is that people are raised from birth to eat these slabs of meat that havent an identity until given one by the individuals themselves. We cannot identify with food, as they are introduced to us. Cats and dogs are not presented to us as food, therefore we have difficulty getting into that mentality.

Some people convert after seeing the faces to go with the meat, and some dont. That part i cannot explain.

My kids just got back from camp. I sent up soy protein hot dogs and soy bacon to substitute fotr their meals. They ok’d this. Appaently, some adults told my girls that God would not have put animals on earth if he didnt want us to eat them. Thats when we started disussing cats and dogs and why we dont eat them, even though God put them on earth.

I’m veg, but I can definitely answer this question. People care more about their friends and family than strangers. We even do this with people, who are the same species as us. It’s okay for us to drop a bomb on a city if we’re at war with the enemy, but if they drop a bomb on us, it’s morally wrong. People argue that waterboarding, etc, are okay for "us" to do, but if "they" torture someone, it’s wrong. Basically, humans don’t see things in black and white.

Well I’m not a carnivore pet lover, but I am an omnivorous pet lover. I would have no particular problem eating animals of domesticated varieties such as dogs or cats. In fact dog meat is considered a delicacy in much of Asia and Africa. I can only speak for myself, but I would imagine it’s that those domesticated animals (dogs, cats, etc.) tend to have a greater attachment to humans. Dogs are usually quite loyal to their owners, for example, and this humanlike quality may make many people think twice about eating them.

This was resolved thousands of years ago regarding Kosher foods. While many simply see the Bible or Torah as a religious or spiritual work – it has plenty to teach in terms of daily living. So, read the Bible and what it has to say about what is considered kosher and what is not. I am not Jewish, but I can agree with their philosophy toward eating.
