And is this a major contributor to the seeming increase in behaviour problems in dogs.
Most of our dogs were originally bred to do a job of work which often meant they were out and on the go for most of the day.
In todays society and now kept as pets this isn’t the case.
Just out of interest what sort of dog do you have and how much exersise does it get?
My dogs don’t get enough exercise. When we lived in the woods, the dogs did a lot more running. Now, they are mostly just ‘walked’ and don’t get nearly as much running time.
One of them has developed an OCD..Kleptomania..( she steals and hides things..tools, and all manner of stuff..if it is missing we look in her hiding places)
I hope that when we move this summer, that behavior will improve when she is able to run more.
They are sighthounds. .
I have a lab collie – so very active breed and whilst we have a small 6 by 8 garden we make sure to walk him 6 times a day. He is still a puppy at 10 months but we know that if he doesn’t have a job he will get bored and crazy so we vowed to teach him a new trick every week.
Our walks last approx 30 mins and at weekends these walks tend to be to the nature reserve or the woods. However weather permits long walks as we have two children under 3.
We hope eventually to move to a bigger garden get some chickens and do what i did with my border collie and get him to heard them up every night.

I know my dogs don’t get as much as they want – they were bred to run with hounds and draw fox – they would happily walk in the woods eight hours a day!! They have to make do with an hour or so a day, and more at the weekend…..I console myself that the hunt only went out a couple of times a month! And we have a large garden.

I have two german shepherd dogs that play constantly and get regular walks….not jogs.
What really bothers me is lazy people who get mid to less than mid size dog and the lazy owner hops on a bike or roller blades and proceeds to cover mile after mile of concrete while the canine lags with no foot, ankle or hip support and is expected to keep up, all the while following in his masters path, tongue dragging on the ground, eagerly at his side.

It happens all the time…

I have a lab/shepherd mix (4 years old) – He gets 3 walks/jogs a day each for 40 minutes then we take him to the dog park 4 times a week. He could also go out in the fenced in large back yard whenever he pleases. In the summer we take him to the lake to swim.
Our three small dogs (under 10 pounds) (5-6 years old) – They get walked two-three times a day for 20 minutes each time they go for a walk. They also go to the lake and run around in the summer(they aren’t a fan of water) and go out in the backyard whenever they want to.
All my dogs like to go hiking with me (which i do once every two weeks).
My dogs are very well behaved and happy.

I have an Australian Shep who is now 11 yrs young when she was younger until a few years ago she would accompany me on my runs (I’m a marathoner) so she would do anywhere from 5-15 miles every other day I didn’t take her on the runs everyday …on her off days we would go and now do to the woods (beautiful) for about 2 hours of hiking and enjoying nature in all her glory….we also did agility and played at dog parks…threw a Frisbee etc….I come home at lunch and took her for a walk …Now that she is older and I noticed joint pain if she runs (otherwise she seems like a pup) I do take her and my new pup (a Westie) for 2 good long walks daily and they play together racing around the house….we go to the dog parks still….I just watch the movement and limit it when necessary…we still enjoy the woods…..I do believe in alot of stimulation for all animals they aren’t just to look cute and sit on our laps….good question…..

I have a Rottwieler who gets about two hours of exercise a day. He plays with the new puppy we have outside, goes for walks, and even helps with the yard work by picking up sticks around the house.
