Any suggestions on Dog food for sick dogs?
March 11th, 2010 | by admin |I have a 12 year ol Border Collie with advanced heart failure. He is on several meds, and his condition is (for now) controlled. My problem is getting him to eat. The Vet suggested baby food; that worked for awhile. I’ve also tried several flavors of cat food, and he ate them, but soon lost interest. Boiled chicken, frosty paws, salmon, tuna… my list of attempts is very long. Anyone have anymore ideas??? I’d appreciate the input!
I am so sorry. It is hard to watch a sick pet and feel frustrated because you can’t help them. We went through something similar with a terrier a few years back. She had advanced liver cancer, and no matter what we tried, she would only eat it once and then refuse it the next day. We went through everything from steak to crap wet dog food in an attempt to get her to eat.
Unfortunately we completely missed what she was trying to tell us, and that was that she was tired and wanted to rest. By the time we realized it, she had lost tons of weight and looked like a skeleton with fur.
That was when we made the painful but necessary decision to let her go. I think she was pleased with our decision, and we will see her again, when we follow her.
Once a dog loses interest in food, it may be that he is giving up and wants you to as well.
Possibly now is the time to think what is best for him? Just a suggestion. I know how hard it is.

When my dog was have stomach problems, I tried eveything and what ended up working was rice. Cooked rice really helped his stomach and he was able to keep it down.

Canned Science Diet AD — like mush for ailing pets and very high in calories and fat. Or get some Nutrical from your vet. Small amount on her paws and he will like it off. Great supplement. Your vet should offer you either of these to try.

wet canned dog food is working for my dog… use a well known brand though and get different flovors and never feed it the same kind twice in a row… my dog has been on it for months and she still loves it

When my pup was not eating due to her illness (distemper) I tried EVERYTHING under the sun. One day i tried melting a teaspoon of peanut butter and mixed it with water to make like a sauce to pour over her food….sure enough that was one thing that got her to eat. Also, since she was not able to smell her food really well the vet suggested adding a pinch of garlic powder to her food and heating it to make it more appetizing to her….that worked for a little bit. Good luck to you and your pup!
